Selecting a Coach is a very big step for most SME owners so use these pointers as your "check list" with us or any of our competitors in the interests of you getting your decision right.

  • Make sure the mentor/coach understands your ultimate goals for the business, whether it is fast expansion, or to reduce your hours and prepare the business for sale or transfer to your children.

  • Contact referees of the business mentor/coach. Talk to owners who have been mentored/coached by the prospective mentor/coach.

  • Choose a mentor/coach with wide industry experience and business experience, and skills appropriate to your needs.

  • Have a written agreement about confidentiality. Make sure you can trust the mentor/coach's ethics and ability to keep sensitive information confidential.

  • Develop a job description for your business mentor/coach before you hire one. Write it down.

  • Look for potential mentor/coaches through your network of personal or business contacts. Seek word of mouth recommendations.

  • Interview potential mentor/coaches as you would a new employee.

  • Choose a mentor/coach with whom you have a personal rapport.
