YBM Questionnaire for prospective Coach or Mentor 

Selecting a business coach is sometimes a daunting task for some SME owners so use these pointers as your "check list" with YBM or indeed any business coach, in the interests of you getting your decision right.  Remember, you are interviewing them to assist you in developing a more successful business.  It is no different to interviewing someone to join your staff!

  • Make sure the business coach understands your ultimate goals for the business, whether it is rapid expansion, reduction in your hours or preparing the business for sale or transfer to your children.
  • Contact referees of the business coach. Talk to owners who have been mentored/coached by the prospective mentor/coach.
  • Choose a business coach with broad industry and business experience, and skills appropriate to your needs.
  • Have a written agreement about confidentiality. Make sure you can trust the mentor/coach's ethics and ability to keep sensitive information confidential.
  • Develop a job description for your business coach before you hire one. Write it down before you meet.
  • Look for a potential business coach through your network of personal or business contacts. Seek word of mouth recommendations.
  • Interview potential business mentors as you would a new employee.
  • Choose a business coach with whom you have a personal rapport.

There are many people who represent themselves as Business Coaches or Mentors working through franchise groups using workbook modules and/or worksheets. Being encouraged to purchase franchisor's books and CDs is not going to assist you grow your business in the short term.  Time is of the essence and this is respected by YBM, hence the  individual approach and program used by YBM mentors.
