WHEN YOU COMMUNICATE, WHAT MESSAGES DO YOU SEND?

From the moment we enter this world, we start to communicate.  Our first message?  Usually a cry of protest and indignation at being ejected from the warmth and comfort of the womb into a strange and unfamiliar world.  Even without words we are able to attract and gain attention and comforting - and perhaps something to drink!

From that day, we develop and use our communication skills, often instinctively and without awareness of the processes we are actually using.  Communication is an integral part of living and how well or how poorly we communicate has a significant impact on everyday life.  Communication establishes the quality of our relationships, has a bearing on our career path and success in life, and affects the level of support and help we receive from others.

Effective communicators have "second person" sensitivity.  They focus on the other person, not just on themselves.  It is easy to gauge this in a conversation by simply listening for the number of times a person uses the words "you" and "we" as distinct from "I" and "me".

To develop these skills, take an interest in other people, your customers and your staff.  Your approach has to be sincere.  Recognise that communication is a two-way process.  Someone has to talk and someone has to listen, and you won't get someone's attention until you talk about something which interests them.  People want to talk about themselves, their needs and experiences.

Remember to keep the conversation centred on the other person and wait until they ask about you.  Only then will they be ready to listen to you.

There is much written about this topic and it is well worth the time and effort to develop your communication skills and the quality of the messages you send because you see, what you send out is what you get back.

"It is not what our message does to the listener but what the listener does with our message that determines our success as communicators."  Hugh MacKay
