| THE HAPPINESS-CENTRED BUSINESS
Customers enjoy buying from businesses where the team members are happy. Happy team members tend to be more productive and have a long term commitment to their occupation. Most people in business think that their customers buy their product because it is better or cheaper, but stop and think about your own experiences – grumpy, unsmiling people are not fun. It’s those who are happy, get pleasure out of assisting you in every way who will win you over every time!
Imagine, you are happy and the day is progressing pleasantly until you walk into a bag store and start to look around. There are a few bags that look interesting and one in particular, a little black number with gold clasp, catches your eye. It is within your preferred price range so you look around for the sales assistant. You locate her lurking in the corner behind the counter. She is unsmiling and her body language tells you that at the very least she has just suffered a major loss on the stock market. She does not look happy. You smile at her and incline your head towards the bag in an unmistakable buying signal and thinking that a sale may improve her day.
She stares blankly at you, immersed in her own problems. Eventually she surfaces, sighs at the inevitability of having to provide service and ambles over. She is obviously sick in her spirit and as she approaches you can feel your own good cheer escaping. “Can I help you?” she manages. You indicate the bag. “I’m interested in that little black bag with the shiny gold clasp.” With some effort she picks up the bag and disinterestedly hands it to you. She looks as though she would prefer to be somewhere else. You thank her and examine the bag. Making conversation in an attempt to cheer her you inquire about her day. “Terrible,” she confides. “It’s been a real busy week. Too many people in town. The boss is really pushing us and the senior salesgirl is a real bitch. Thank God it’s Friday!”
Suddenly you feel surrounded by negativity and unhappiness. It is dragging you down and you want to escape. Mumbling an excuse you hand her back the bag, turn and run towards the door! People don’t enjoy buying from unhappy people because it makes them unhappy too!
